Cao Fei's art is a study in exuberant ambiguity. Her early works were among the first to tackle the vibrant youth, factory, online and regional cultures of the Mainland, capturing and reflecting upon the new kinds of human subjects and social relations that its economic transformation was making possible. This exhibition, Cao Fei’s first large institutional exhibition in Asia, revolves around a newly commissioned film, Prison Architect, that engages directly with Tai Kwun's layered history.

Led by local artist Wong Tin Yan and his instructor team, these workshops give participating families an opportunity to make toys together by recycling scrap wood. Woodwork has long been part of the Tai Kwun story, as carpentry was a form of prison labour in the 19th century Victoria Prison. Tai Kwun is also a supporter of upcycling, as the facades of its two new buildings — JC Contemporary and JC Cube — are made from discarded wheel rims.
