OVERVIEW

ENCORE! – a celebration of Tai Kwun’s 6th anniversary

As Tai Kwun turns six years old and we reflect on thousands of events, shows, exhibitions, performances and festivals which have taken place in Tai Kwun since opening in May 2018, there is one powerfully consistent feature and a constant source of inspiration which fills Tai Kwun with energy: it’s you – the Hong Kong public who have come in the millions since Day One and who return regularly to catch our ever-changing programme. The French word “encore”, meaning “again” or “more”, usually demonstrates the enthusiasm of the audience at the end of a great performance, but on this 6th anniversary, Tai Kwun and our founder and steadfast funder The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) are applauding Hong Kong for taking Tai Kwun so completely to its heart, and we hope to see you again and more often. Thank you for your resounding and palpable support and please come and celebrate with us during this action-packed anniversary month.

Awaiting your next visit is a vibrant line-up of shows, exhibitions, events and new experiences designed to appeal to everyone from art first-time visitors or couples on a first date to art aficionados and those fascinated by history and heritage. A major contemporary art exhibition by a truly global figure takes place alongside a new series of guided tours with a special architectural focus; the vast and welcoming Parade Ground is enlivened by a spectacular French physical theatre show while conservation talks and world class chamber music performances take place in the exquisite intimacy of JC Cube.

Tai Kwun has welcomed more than 17 million visitors in the last 6 years, the majority of whom are Hong Kong people, many returning frequently to see the ever-changing offering of Tai Kwun’s 365-day festival. Thank you for embracing Tai Kwun and for realising the dream.

Bravo, Hong Kong! Encore! Encore!

Hidden Spaces Tour

25-26.05.2024

Join an exceptional tour of three hidden spaces at Tai Kwun, often off-limits to the public due to conservation and operational considerations.

Get ready to climb the hidden stairs that brought defendants from the underground cell to the Magistracy. Next, enter the thick-walled prison cells transformed into backstage dressing rooms for performers and follow the underground tunnel to a secluded air raid shelter. Besides experiencing these historical spaces of submission, incarceration, security, and life protection, participants will learn the solutions and challenges of heritage conservation, the efforts being taken to preserve our site and develop a deeper understanding of criminal justice, punishment and rehabilitation, conflict and war.

Bruce Nauman

15.05-18.08.2024

Tai Kwun Contemporary is proud to present a major survey exhibition by the US-born artist Bruce Nauman, one of the most influential artists working today. Curated in collaboration with the Bruce Nauman Studio, and based primarily on works from the Pinault Collection and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, as well as loans from Tate, The Museum of Modern Art (New York), Dia Art Foundation, and The Sonnabend Collection Foundation, Tai Kwun Contemporary’s exhibition takes the form of a survey covering aspects of the artist’s entire career, and is the first show of this kind to be presented in Hong Kong.

The second session of Tai Kwun Conversations: Chinese Cultural Heritage Series presents “Interpretation and Uses of Heritage in Urban and Rural China” by Dr. Kuanghan Li, Regional Representative (China) of World Monuments Fund. Joining the conversation will be Prof. Richard Engelhardt, former UNESCO Regional Advisor for Culture in Asia and the Pacific.

In the context of mass-urbanization, widening urban-rural disparity, and an aggressive campaign to integrate tourism and culture, what are the strategies and case studies for integrating urban and rural heritage into the wider goal of sustainable development in contemporary China through interpretation and uses of cultural resources? This programme offers insights on recent developments in China’s heritage conservation and management.
