閾限谷每月都會舉行有關攝影書的交流會,是次第十九次交流會上,閾限谷會從歷史與技術的角度,探討攝影書的定義、功用和可能性。會上亦會討論攝影成像技術的演變如何影響攝影書的未來。

第一部分:攝影書欣賞——分享攝影書的定義,同時討論攝影書何以具有震撼力。每位參加者請攜帶一本攝影書。

第二部分:閾限谷成員Marty Miller會用自己製作或搜集得來的實驗性攝影書示範,闡明攝影書的溝通能力。
第三部分:如有足夠時間,參加者將會分成小組,運用自身經驗講述攝影書對他們的意義。交流會結束前,參加者會按照之前其他環節所得,與全體成員分享。

閾限谷簡介
閾限谷是一個讓大家交流攝影書及其主題内容的平台。我們每月會有一次聚會,通過攝影書一起討論與攝影相關的問題、品評新出版的攝影作品,大家積極參與,公開交換意見。希望這個新興群組對攝影媒介的深入探究,能擴濶香港本土藝術家的視野,並與亞太區其他攝影師進行對話。 IG:@phoboko

With monthly participatory sessions around the subject of photography, Phoboko presents their 19th session, exploring the definition, functions and possible use of photobooks from historical and technological perspectives—along with questions about the future of photobooks in relation to changes in photo-imaging technology.

Part 1: Photobook appreciation—definitions of photobooks will be shared alongside a discussion on photobooks and what makes them impactful. Participants are asked to bring one photobook for this section.

Part 2: Marty Miller, a co-organiser of Phoboko, presents on using experimental photobooks, including his own and others as examples, in order to articulate points to discuss their communicative potential.

Part 3: Given enough time, participants will break into small groups to articulate what a photobook means to them through the experiences they provoke. Either way, the ensuing discussion will build on the other sections, and be used as a way to promote sharing with the larger group before the workshop ends.

Phoboko
Phoboko is a platform for bringing people together through photobooks and the topics they contain. Phoboko hosts monthly meetings and uses photobooks as a tool to talk about issues related to photography, to question new photographic work, and to openly share ideas via participatory methods. Phoboko’s emerging community interrogates photography as a medium, promotes the vision of local Hong Kong artists, and does so while in dialogue with other photographers in the Asia-Pacific region. 活動會介紹最新出版的《Best! Letters from Asian Americans in the arts》,由何恩懷與Daisy Nam合編,書中輯錄73封寫於2020年的信函,透過亞裔美國藝術家、策展人、教育工作者、藝術史學者、編輯、作家及設計師的經驗,捕捉當時的政治及社會環境所處的獨特歷史時刻。書信形式的敘事讓讀者可從個人層面窺探亞裔美國人經驗的複雜性,衝破大眾對小數族裔既有的迷思。該書的編輯將出席是次現場及線上同步舉行的活動,並由作者張怡、陳思穎及譚鴻鈞朗讀節錄自該書的內容。

亞洲藝術文獻庫與大館當代美術館共同呈獻

何恩懷是一位藝術家、藝術教育工作者及亞洲藝術文獻庫的行政總監。

This event celebrates the release of Best! Letters from Asian Americans in the arts, edited by Christopher K. Ho and Daisy Nam. This collection of seventy-three letters written in 2020 captures an unprecedented moment in politics and society through the experiences of Asian-American artists, curators, educators, art historians, editors, writers, and designers. The form of the letter offers readers intimate insights into the complexities of Asian American experiences, moving beyond the model-minority myth. This is an on-site and online event with the editors, and features readings from contributors Patty Chang, Hera Chan, and John Tain. 

Co-presented by Asia Art Archive and Tai Kwun Contemporary

Christopher K. Ho is an artist, educator, and Executive Director of Asia Art Archive.
Daisy Nam is the curator at Ballroom Marfa, a contemporary art space located in Far West Texas.
Hera Chan is a cultural worker whose practice is civic, informed by political praxis and structured by complicity with her peers.
Patty Chang is a Los Angeles based artist and educator who uses performance, video, installation and narrative forms when considering identity, gender, transnationalism, colonial legacies, the environment, large-scale infrastructural projects and impacted subjectivities.
John Tain is Head of Research at Asia Art Archive.

This workshop aims to teach participants how to make a small 6 to 8 page illustrated concertina-style book. Participants will translate their ideas into illustrations for their books using an intaglio printmaking technique, drypoint, after which participants will then use their prints to be constructed and assembled into a concertina book.

“Why don’t we make a book about listening with a pencil?”

“Why don’t we make a book accessible to all?”

“Why don’t we make a book about expressing sound and listening using our hands?”

Now all these “why don’t we” questions have become a part of soundpocket’s “pocket book of sound” series. Together with Wayne Choi and Joseph Yiu, Hsu Wai-lun and So Lai-ping, and So Wai-lam, we share our observations and thoughts about how we perceive sounds and how we imagine others perceiving sounds, in the form of experiential books. “Shape with Things” invites everyone to observe their unconscious habits while listening; “dok dat dap dap” experiments with the possibility of recalling people’s listening experiences in the rain using different senses; and “Hands Up: sound & listening” introduces us to a language that is so close to us, yet we are not usually discussed.

In this upcoming DIALOGUE event, our moderator Beatrix Pang has a conversation with Wayne Choi and Joseph Yiu, Hsu Wai-lun and So Lai-ping, and So Wai-lam about these new publications in the “pocket book of sound” series. Join us at this sharing session and experience the books for yourself!

畫我,畫你

Drawing Me, Drawing You

書展的某個下午,香港漫畫家陳嘉賢將會主持五分鐘肖像素描。每次的現場活動,會分別邀請訪客讓陳替他們畫人像,同時也自己動筆,為陳畫肖像。之後參與者可以把陳的畫作留為紀念,並拿自己所畫的與藝術家交換。活動正配合目前在藝術家書籍圖書館展出的「自我,肖像」,該節目是對觀看、主客互動、交換及買賣迷你作品的一場實驗。

Through one afternoon of BOOKED:, Hong Kong-based cartoonist Kaitlin Chan will conduct five-minute portrait sessions. During this live event, visitors are invited to have their portraits drawn by Chan, and to draw Chan themselves, at the same time. Visitors will be able to keep their portraits from Chan, in exchange for their own rendering of the artist. Inspired by the current Artists’ Book Library display, Self, as Portrait, this programme is an experiment in looking, mutual participation, and the exchange and trading of mini-artworks.

The Digital Archive of Artists’ Publishing (DAAP) is an interactive, user-driven, searchable database of artists’ books and publications, that acts as a hub to engage with others, built by artists, publishers and a community of creative practitioners.

DAAP is committed to challenging the politics of traditional archives regarding inclusion and accessibility, from a post-colonial, critical gender and LGBTQI perspective. With an emphasis on inclusivity from the start, we aim to privilege anecdotal histories and multiple perspectives alongside factual data, whilst our wiki style approach means that users can upload and describe their own materials, choose how to describe themselves in relation to these materials, and select appropriate sharing permissions at the time of upload.

In the talk we will introduce the key principles of the archive, and demonstrate how to catalogue a publication in the DAAP.

藝術家出版數碼文獻庫 (DAAP) 「此刻難以為藝術家創作的書籍下任何單一定義。」英國藝術家Simon Cutts說。近十年國際藝術界對書籍藝術的重視與日俱增,藝術書展更像雨後春筍般在各地興起, 但不是每個觀眾/讀者都了解「書籍藝術」。若要討論「書」在藝術領域的價值,首先得把一些書藝美學關鍵詞弄明白:書籍藝術、藝術家書籍、書籍裝訂、書籍設計,它們究竟有何分別?是此講座就是要在這一問題上進行探討,同時分享世界各地迷人的書籍藝術作品。

活動由陳曦成呈獻。

"It is by now difficult to substantiate any single definition of a book as made by an artist,” the British artist Simon Cutts has said. In recent years, the art world internationally has paid greater and greater attention to “book arts”, while art book fairs have mushroomed throughout the world. Yet not all visitors or readers fully understand what “book arts” is. If the value of “books” in the field of art is to be discussed, certain aesthetic terms in “book arts” ought to be elucidated: how are “book arts”, “artist books”, “book binding”, “book design” different? This talk explores these terms while sharing mesmerising examples of book arts from around the world.

這場講座式表演層次複雜,含蘊廣而變化多,運用了歷史檔案資料、虛構的回應、思辨的文本、自傳式人種志,以及受訪者身爲混血兒在香港的生活經歷,還加上經過挑選的現成照片,可穿戴的電子設備。這次演出旨在揭露香港人對混血兒身份的態度從何而來,又如何持續至今,從對之施加污名,到迷戀崇拜,一直抱持著種種不盡不實的假設,令兼具多種血統的人士總是受到名譽損害,屈從於不平等的種族規範。在混血兒切身感受的生活經驗中,二元對立是毫無意義的,因爲身體內部不可能有一條截然劃分的斷層線,說這一半是「他們」,那一半是「我們」。不是一半一半,而是兩者共存。

Kay Mei Ling Beadman 是香港藝術家、研究員,也是藝術家自營的獨立展覽空間 Hidden Space 的聯合創辦人。她利用自己中英混血的身份及文化背景,以自傳式人種誌的方式,探索構成雙重身份的複雜情況,通過具體生活經驗揭露社會政治和文化建構的各種假設。她從事跨學科藝術實踐,包括裝置、錄像、繪畫、文字和表演。Kay 出生於英國,輾轉成長於香港和英國兩地,1999年起定居香港,一直在港工作。她擁有英國雷丁大學的藝術學士、澳洲皇家墨爾本理工大學的藝術碩士的學位,目前是香港城市大學創意媒體學院博士研究生。

This lecture performance uses a tangled, multivocal combination of archival historical records, fictive responses, speculative texts, autoethnographic and interviewee accounts of lived mixed race experience in Hong Kong, as well as found photographs and wearables. It unsettles the origins and ongoing attitudes towards mixed race identity in Hong Kong, from stigma to fetishization, and how assumptions along that continuum are shaped by discredited but still prevalent racial hierarchical norms. In the bodily lived experience of mixed race, binary oppositions make no sense, there can be no fault line of ‘them’ and ‘us’ within the body. Not half but both.

Kay Mei Ling Beadman is an artist, researcher and co-founder of Hidden Space, an independent artist-run space in Hong Kong. She uses her own Chinese and English mixed heritage as an autoethnographic springboard to explore aspects of complex dual identity formation, drawing on embodied aspects of lived experience amid socio-politically and culturally constructed assumptions. Her practice is multidisciplinary and includes installation, video, painting, text and performance. Beadman was born in England, zigzagged between Hong Kong and the UK growing up, but has lived and worked permanently in Hong Kong since 1999. She has a BFA from the University of Reading, UK, an MFA from RMIT University, Australia, and is currently a PhD candidate at the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong.

據點。句點創辦人黎肖嫻將聯同錄像宣言團隊成員黃慧心分享有關團隊出版的《我們的錄像宣言》系列,以及書本跟錄像藝術之間的關係。
在座談中,講者將會先介紹據點。句點以及團隊所出版的錄像宣言系列,並分享今年出版的《我們的錄像宣言 ② 記述的衝動》中重要的公開徵集概念,闡述該書本項目如何從過去出版發展而成。團隊亦會介紹讀者閱讀及使用該書的方法,並分享他們與眾多電影創作者的錄像對話所產生的思考。座談亦會預告《我們的錄像宣言》系列的計劃,以及錄像雜誌的簡述。

2016 年,以研究主導創作的跨領域藝術家黎肖嫻博士開展了錄像書寫宣言計劃,其時,製造影像的工具無遠弗屆、層出不窮已不是新鮮事,正是思量如何重新開發聲影活動的時候,藉此推動錄像藝術的轉化。錄像藝術強調以流動影像去「書寫」;書寫即意味著積極主動的把我們個人的主體性插入以懲治與操控為本的當代社會。我們慶幸能夠集合到一群遺世獨立、勤懇奮進的錄像書寫人在一起;各人帶來了激烈的思辯以外,也能為自己的創作於當下留下註腳,繼續上路。中英雙語、共365頁的《我們的錄像宣言 ② 記述的衝動》囊括了49位本地與海外錄像書寫人的錄像宣言、共67份錄像作品。

In this talk, Floating Projects founder Linda Lai, along with fellow member Winsome Wong, will share about the Manifesto series published by the team, in relation to the connections between books and video art. Throughout the talk, the speakers will discuss Floating Projects’ published manifesto series, including the concept for the open call that led to the newly published Manifesto 2, and its progression from the inaugural edition. The team members will also share ways of approaching the book by readers, along with some thoughts from conversations with different filmmakers and considering future plans for the Manifesto series and video zines.

The Manifesto series on videography, launched in 2016, is a project initiated by research-based interdisciplinary artist, Dr. Linda Chiu-han Lai, to encourage the repurposing of videography in a time when image-making tools are ubiquitous: Videography highlights “writing” with moving images; and writing asserts the proactive insertion of our subjectivities into our contemporary society of discipline and control. As such, we have gathered self-directed, diligent videographers to enter a series of rigorous dialogues and to become a theorist of their own practice. , a 365-page bilingual book, includes 49 local and overseas videographers’ manifestos, and a total of 67 video works.

藝術家蔡仞姿、策展人方敏兒及文獻庫研究總監譚鴻鈞將就Afterall與亞洲藝術文獻庫聯合出版的「Exhibition Histories」系列叢書《Art and Its Worlds: Exhibitions, Institutions, and Art Becoming Public》展開對談。

討論焦點將圍繞由梁秉均、蔡仞姿及游靜策劃的裝置及行為藝術作品《東西遊戲》(1989),探討該項目的合作性質。對談前將放映該行為藝術作品的錄像,錄像現為文獻庫館藏。

This conversation grows out of Art and Its Worlds: Exhibitions, Institutions, and Art Becoming Public, the latest volume in Afterall’s Exhibition Histories series, co-published by Asia Art Archive. The discussion between artist Choi Yan Chi, curator Janet Fong, and AAA Head of Research John Tain will focus on Object-Act-Ivities (1989), an installation and performance co-organised by Leung Ping Kwan, Choi Yan Chi, and Yau Ching, exploring the collaborative nature of the project. It will be preceded by a screening of a video made on the occasion of the performance, now in AAA’s collection.

Choi Yan Chi is a visual artist who has been active since the 1980s and a co-founder of 1a Space, one of oldest independent, non-profit art organisations in Hong Kong.  She is often credited with helping introduce installation art to the region, and currently has a work on view at the Hong Kong Museum of Art.  

Janet Fong Man Yee is Research Assistant Professor at Academy of Visual Arts (AVA), Hong Kong Baptist University.  She has curated numerous exhibitions across Asia, one of which, New Horizons: Ways of Seeing Hong Kong Art in the 80s and 90s, is currently on view at the Hong Kong Museum of Art. 

John Tain is Head of Research at Asia Art Archive, and is a series editor for Afterall Exhibition Histories.

本工作坊旨在教大家如何製作一本6至8頁、帶有插圖的手風琴摺叠式小書。 參加者會使用t凹版印刷技術直刻法,將他們的意念化為插圖。然後把印張裝訂成一本手風琴摺叠書。

This workshop aims to teach participants how to make a small 6 to 8 page illustrated concertina-style book. Participants will translate their ideas into illustrations for their books using an intaglio printmaking technique, drypoint, after which participants will then use their prints to be constructed and assembled into a concertina book.

藝術家楊俊和策展人朱佩瑿,將會討論印刷出版在楊俊跨學科實踐中所扮演的角色,還會談談今次他為藝術書展創作的特別項目《Syndromes and Fictions》。楊氏以印刷方式製作藝術品的手法,在形式和概念上均與眾不同,帶有遊戲人間的意味。楊俊以個體身份,探索如何透過多重複製,令出版的材料散發開,實驗一下當「藝術家身爲作者」時,如何通過文字遊戲或與他人合作,表明身份可以互相轉換。楊俊的作品從電影到裝置藝術,往往涵蓋了印刷材料,可見他以印刷作爲自我表現的同時,也把做書與看書視爲另一種旅行——在不同的旅途上,不但可以把我的故事講給你聽,也可以通過講故事讓我更了解自己。

In this conversation, artist Jun Yang and curator Ingrid Pui Yee Chu discuss the role of publishing in his multidisciplinary practice, including for Syndromes and Fictions, a special project of BOOKED:. Yang’s approach to art in print distinguishes itself both in form and concept, such as in its more playful aspects. This includes how Yang, as an individual, mines the ways in which published materials can be reproduced in multiple and dispersed in order to experiment with the “artist as author”, such as through word play to indicate interchangeable identities, or by collaborating with others. The frequent inclusion of printed matter within Yang’s larger practice, which ranges from film to installation, also testifies to artists’ self-representation through print—all while cultivating the experience of books as a form of travel, being a format that enables storytelling, both in terms of the tales we tell others, and what this tells about ourselves.
