For three nights in November, the Prison Yard becomes Hong Kong’s newest and most unusual concert venue for the performances by the renowned Württemberg Chamber Orchestra Heilbronn (WKO), one of Germany’s most established ensembles. The three programmes, though exploring vastly contrasting moments of Berlin’s history, all share their starting point in a fascinating historical event which took place in May 1747, when the elderly JS Bach was summoned to the palace of Frederick the Great of Prussia. Bach was invited to improvise on a meandering theme written by the King. He rose to the challenge immediately, and took the theme much further, putting the original theme through a series of musical metamorphoses, and finishing A Musical Offering, a gift for the King in the following weeks.
The three evenings feature renowned soloists alongside WKO, performing the most exquisite musical masterpieces by JS Bach, CPE Bach, Mendelssohn, R Strauss and more.
