Lacquer Sculptures by Shingo MURAMOTO
Dance in the breeze!

It’s very true that the ancient craft of lacquer is one of Asia’s oldest artistic traditions. Today we can look at some inventive ways in which contemporary artists have embraced new and unusual materials and methods. The Gallery by SOIL, the first gallery in Hong Kong specialising in lacquer art, presents contemporary artworks by Japanese master Shingo Muramoto. At the exhibition, we can find peace where the leaves dance in the melody of the cool breeze that float through the air.

Shingo Muramoto has been challenging himself to create forms that express, simultaneously, a sense both of lightness and tension. Normally works of lacquer seem to be very solid, but he wanted to create forms that were light, and that might appear to be moved by the wind. In order to express this feeling, he developed a technique of stretching fabric over bowed twigs in order to create the body of a form. The forms evolve from the relationship between different materials: the bowed twigs create movement; the fabric starched over them creates the curved surface, and then the lacquer coated on the surface finalises the forms.  His goal is to make interesting forms through the relationships of each of the three components.

Shingo Muramoto’s works are in permanent collection of prestigious museums such as V&A Museum in the UK, Philadelphia Museum of Art in the US, Design Centre Ishikawa in Japan. Don’t miss the opportunity to view these museum quality artworks.
