Our latest Tai Kwun Conversations will feature the artist and choreographer Maria Hassabi in dialogue with the curator Xue Tan. They will be discussing Hassabi’s distinctive live installations and her new Tai Kwun Contemporary exhibition I’ll Be Your Mirror, her first solo presentation in Asia.
One of the leading artists working at the intersection of visual arts and performance, Maria Hassabi explores the relationship between the live body, the still image, and the sculptural object, all the while seeking to disrupt our sense of time. With her new exhibition I’ll Be Your Mirror, the artist brings together her choreographic practice, sound, sculpture, photography, and painting, testing the expectations of spectators within the space of a museum. The exhibition confronts the notion of one’s own image through a gold scheme of reflections, thereby leaving a lasting impact on the way that we perceive ourselves and those around us.
In the conversation, Maria Hassabi will speak more of her iconic choreographic language of stillness and deceleration, her fascination in the contested colour of gold and in mirrors, as well as the contradictions in representing of our realities.
