"Tai Kwun Circus Plays" proudly enters its fifth edition! From December to January, circus veterans in town and around the world will get together at Tai Kwun to present an array of breathtaking contemporary circus performances. Let's have a merry juggling festive season with your friends and family together! The pioneering British circus group Gandini Juggling will return to Tai Kwun after their stunning work SIGMA in 2018, bringing us LIFE Event No. 2 with ingenious use of body language. On Christmas Eve, UniCircle Flow from Japan which wowed America's Got Talent last year will come to town and stun the audience with their vigorous unicycling dance show, Rock It! Unicycle. Local art group TS Crew and veteran choreographer Mui Cheuk Yin join hands in Ho! Ho! Ho! Monkey King is Coming To Town that brings together various circus elements – tricking, parkour, bungee jumping and contemporary dance. With a local touch of Hong Kong culture, it will bring the mythical figure of Monkey King from Journey to the West to life.
With emerging circus talents in Hong Kong, we have New Boom In Circus inviting dance and circus artist Patrick Pun and CBO Juggling Team to stage new contemporary circus works at Tai Kwun, and Circus Playground gathering new local circus and juggling performers to have fun with the crowd in a performance full of street vibes.
Only Bones v1.0, the sold-out solo show at the Edinburgh Fringe created by New Zealand physical theatre and mime artist Thom Monckton, is sure to burst you into laughter. The show will tell a story by involving only one light, one chair, one performer, no text, and a mini stage area of 1.2 metres, filling the audience with fun and amusement. PLI, a mind-blowing solo work from Czech multidisciplinary artist Viktor Černický, will use 22 conference chairs as props to construct an incredible circus universe. Excitement guaranteed!
The finale of the annual circus carnival is the Ting-koo-ki Mad Skills Gala and Battle (TKK), with local juggling elites and contestants from Taiwan, Costa Rica, Belgium and Brazil to bring the audience a passionate circus battle to welcome the arrival of 2023. This year, we also provide training for juggling experts at Circus Camp for Professionals – the world’s leading jugglers Sean Gandini and Kati Ylä-Hokkala are invited again as instructors, leading local circus artists and contemporary dancers to explore the possibilities for circus acrobatics. Any juggling tricks for laymen and newbies? Yes! You're welcome to take part in Circus Challenge on Instagram to learn at home from our circus experts, or watch the newly produced circus short film: No. Infinity (∞).
Come and immerse yourself in the joyful and superb art experience at Tai Kwun Circus Plays 2022 this Christmas and New Year holidays!
