General

A city is a fertile ground, nurtured by the lives and experiences of its inhabitants, from which artists draw their inspiration. Committed to this vision, Tai Kwun establishes a cross-sector platform empowering artists to explore their full potential in artistic expression. This results in the seven ambitious new works spanning different genres and eras under “A Season of Performing Arts: SPOTLIGHT 2023” as artists find their muses in the city.

Tai Kwun aims to facilitate a stable and open platform for artists to explore and create works while encouraging continuity and progression. This is notable, especially for artists presenting at Tai Kwun again with increasingly sophisticated pieces. Multi-talented music artists Anna Lo and Rick Lau follow their past acclaimed productions with The Farewell Comeback Tour, a singing tribute to generational identities and differences through an original Hong Kong-style cabaret. Vividly takes audiences on another journey across time and space in Tai Kwun with The Sublime Progressions an immersive theatre experience, weaving a story of migration and diaspora through multi-dimensional soundscapes, lighting, projections, scenery, and performances. Guangzhou choreographer He Qiwo (ErGao) presents Butterfly Island, an alternative dance theatre showcase awash in magic realism that tells the story of those displaced through movements.

As artists become more fluid in identity and expression, the lines between art forms are blurred. Lyricist Chow Yiu Fai and composer Joyce Tang partner with visual artist Chan Wai Lap, singer iii (Iris Liu), Hong Kong New Music Ensemble and a team of young singers and sound archivers in a journey seeking, finding, remembering, imagining, hopefully recognizing: Since When. The Forgiving Trees features choreographer Gigi Yang, visual artist Chow Chun Fai, moving image designer Wilfred Wong and soundscape designer Lawrence Lau with people’s stories depicted through dance, visuals and music. Local playwright Chan Kwan Yee and director Yan Pat To join hands for the first time to present I will die in my home, a narrative stage traversing the story of a woman and her ancestral home in Wan Chai. After the 2022 production of Last Ride, Fresh Eyes, HKAPA drama students will present the work in podcast format, reimagining a ride that passes by familiar landmarks of the city and stirs up memories, recent and past.
