Tai Kwun Contemporary, a non-profit contemporary art centre and an integral part of Tai Kwun – Centre for Heritage and Arts, is calling for curatorial proposals from local and international art organisations and groups for a Hong Kong art exhibition to be presented in the gallery space in summer 2020.

Dedicated to presenting contemporary art exhibitions and programmes as platforms for a continually expanding cultural discourse in Hong Kong, Tai Kwun Contemporary works with other like-minded institutions and art groups to showcase six to eight curated exhibitions every year alongside exciting public programmes.

Submissions guidelines:

  • The proposed exhibition can be either a solo exhibition by a Hong Kong contemporary artist or a group exhibition with Hong Kong artists participating, or an exhibition curated by a Hong Kong based organisation or art group.
  • Each organisation or art group can submit one proposal only.
  • An artist can participate in curatorial proposals from different organisations/art groups and his/her participation does not have to be confirmed before the application submission.
  • Exhibiting artist cannot be the applicant unless he/she is applying as part of an art collective.
  • The applicant is primarily responsible for the curatorial concept and content of the exhibition. The presentation of the exhibition shall be developed in consultation of Tai Kwun Contemporary team. Tai Kwun Contemporary shall provide resources for logistics, equipment, exhibition maintenance and funds for the exhibition production.
  • The proposed exhibition budget should include estimated cost for transportation, production, installation and de-installation, travel expenses and publication costs. A reasonable curatorial fee can be indicated in the application budget, recommended at 5% of the total budget.
  • The exhibition funds shall be paid directly from Tai Kwun to the participants of the exhibition, including artists, producers, authors, logistic companies and contractors.
  • Applicants are encouraged to apply for additional funding from third parties. However, Tai Kwun should be consulted and informed of any intention of third party funding or sponsor proposal.
  • If the proposed exhibition has been presented at another venue or is planned to travel, it should be indicated in the application.
  • Submissions by commercial galleries or with commercial intentions will not be accepted.

In the event of any discrepancy between the English and Chinese versions of these guidelines, the English version shall prevail.

Exhibition conditions:

  • The floor area of the exhibition should be up to 350 m². Additional screenings, talks and performances for the exhibition can be hosted at the Laundry Steps or the JC Cube (for detailed floor plans please refer to our website).
  • Tai Kwun can support the exhibition with a budget of up to HK$ 1.5 million.
  • The final exhibition presentation and production process shall be discussed between the successful applicant and the Tai Kwun Contemporary team.
  • All publicity and interpretation materials of the exhibition must be designed in consultation with Tai Kwun and are published in both Traditional Chinese and English.

Applicants should submit a curatorial proposal of maximum 800 words in English or 1,200 words in Chinese that includes the curatorial concept of the exhibition, the preliminary artist list, an introduction of the organisation or art group, the exhibition budget and up to 4 images, no larger than 2MB in total.

Applications should be written in English or Chinese. For applications in Chinese, please add a short summary (200 words) of the curatorial concept in English.

Submissions are evaluated by the Tai Kwun Contemporary team on their conceptual strength, artistic and curatorial merit and the applicant’s professional experience. The selection process will be supervised by the Tai Kwun Art Working Group.
