General

The finale of Prison Yard Festival: Music from within welcomes the return to Hong Kong of the acclaimed Italian Baroque ensemble il Pomo d’Oro and the first performance in Asia of Polish countertenor sensation Jakub Józef Orliński.

Both il Pomo d’Oro and Jakub Józef Orliński are known for their brilliantly inventive programmes that draw on meticulous historical research to unearth strikingly distinctive composers and boldly expressive music which had been forgotten by history. Il Pomo d’Oro, which merges a profound mastery of historically informed practice with contemporary vitality in performance, shares with Tai Kwun the highest standards of conservation and an unwavering commitment to revitalization of the treasured heritage of which each of us is the custodian.

In the dramatic outdoor setting of the Prison Yard, Orlinski will offer two distinctly different programmes  - Faces of Love and Seasons of the Soul.  While Faces of Love comprises music from the award-winning album of the same name, Seasons of the Soul has been created especially for the Prison Yard Festival and will reveal exciting new discoveries and give voice to the music of long lost composers of the 17th and 18th Century – perhaps even a centuries-late world premiere! History, heritage, artistry and star-power come together in two unforgettable evenings in Tai Kwun’s Prison Yard.

Biography

il Pomo d’Oro
Jakub Józef Orliński

In the year 2022, the ensemble il Pomo d’Oro celebrates its 10th anniversary.

Founded in 2012 by Giulio D’Alessio and Gesine Lübben, it soon established itself as an ensemble of outstanding quality in the field of historically informed performance. Il Pomo d’Oro looks back on 10 years of intense concert activity worldwide and an impressive list of 35 recordings, many of them award winning.

The ensemble is particularly known and sought after as a partner of singers, be it for solo recitals or entire operas in performance and recording. In 2022, il Pomo d’Oro is touring the new programs of Joyce DiDonato, EDEN, and Jakub Jozef Orlinski, Anima Eterna, led by the main conductors of the ensemble, Maxim Emelyanychev (chief conductor), and Francesco Corti (chief guest conductor). The last “opera” production with a stellar cast was Handel’s oratorio Theodora in November 2021, presenting for the first time the new vocal ensemble il Pomo d’Oro. Further operas and oratorios, mainly by Handel, are scheduled for the coming seasons.

In the field of instrumental music, the ensemble focuses on projects with Maxim Emelyanychev conducting and Francesco Corti as soloist and conductor (Bach harpsichord concertos). Zefira Valova, the concert master of il Pomo d’Oro, also appears as a violin soloist in a new album with works by Benda, Graun, among others.

Il Pomo d’Oro is official ambassador of El Sistema Greece, a humanitarian project to provide free musical education to children in Greek refugee camps.

The “il Pomo d’Oro Academy” was launched online during the first wave of the Covid 19 pandemic, offering free music lessons to music students worldwide.

The Academy is now collaborating with El Sistema Venezuela, offering online masterclasses in Baroque music interpretation in cooperation with the Inocente Carreño Itinerant Conservatory in Caracas to the Baroque music ensembles of the El Sistema movement.

In its future residence in Monte San Savino, Italy, the il Pomo d’Oro Academy will host instrumental and vocal masterclasses, workshops and musical education for children.

Polish countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński has established himself as one of the world’s leading artists, triumphing on stage, in concert, and on recording. An exclusive artist on the Warner/Erato label, his first rcording, entitled Anima Sacra, earned him the prestigious Opus Klassik Award for Solo Vocal Recording, while his second, Facce d’amore, earned him the Recording (Solo Recital) of the Year at the 2021 International Opera Awards. His sold-out concerts and recitals throughout Europe and the United States have attracted new followers to the art form, and his live performance of Vivaldi’s “Vedrò con mio diletto,” filmed at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, has amassed nearly ten million online views. Television appearances, including the “Concert de Paris” at the Eiffel Tower and “Rebâtir Notre Dame de Paris,” both with the Orchestre National de France, and Les Victoires de la Musique Classique awards concert accompanied by the Orchestre de l’Opéra National de Lyon, have been broadcast to millions worldwide. In 2019, he was the subject of a major profile in The New Yorker and featured in Polish Vogue. His third album – entitled Anima Aeterna, featuring sacred arias and motets from the Baroque era – was released in October 2021 and toured throughout Europe with Il Pomo d’Oro.

In the 2022/23 season, Orliński makes his role debut at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in the title role in Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice, under the baton of Thomas Hengelbrock and reprises the role at San Francisco Opera in a new production by Matthew Ozawa. He also sings the roles of Arsamene in Serse at Opéra de Rouen under the baton of David Bates and Athamas in a new production of Semele by Claus Guth at Bayerische Staatsoper. On the concert stage, he joins Il Pomo d’Oro, Il Giardino D’Amore and his longtime collaborator, pianist Michał Biel for concerts and recitals across Europe.

In his spare time, Orliński enjoys breakdancing, in addition to other styles of dance.
