Welcome to Family Day at Tai Kwun Contemporary! For this event, co-hosted by Tai Kwun Contemporary and Rooftop Institute, “artist-parents” Law Man Lok and So Wing Po (artists who are also parents) will lead brand new family workshops and art tours. The exhibition serves as a springboard for kids and adults to interact, communicate, connect and observe, inspiring each other along the way. This artist-led programme invites any child aged five or older and accompanied by a parent/guardian to participate. We encourage parents and kids alike to join us for Family Day, an opportunity to enjoy and appreciate contemporary art together!

Double Vision: Parallax Workshop

Close your left eye. Open it. Close your right eye. Open it.

By opening and closing your eyes like this, you experience parallax—the difference in what you see with your left and right eyes. We construct reality based on multiple parallaxes that build up over time. In other words, our understanding of the world is similar to the parable of the blind men and the elephant.

This workshop makes use of slight variations in the two Double Vision exhibition designs that are part of a parallactic guided tour. Come play a game of “truth” as we test the memory of participants.

One becomes two, two become one, and one is not one.

Twirl a rope, and your whole body twists and turns along with it.

Hold up a piece of cloth and let it flutter in the air.

This game of physically interacting with objects often feels like opening a surprise package.

The workshop lets the audience experience the exhibition with their bodies, getting everyone moving and energising the senses.

*Participants in the above workshops will first visit the exhibitions on their own, using guidelines designed by the artists. They will then take part in the workshop.

Law Man Lok (a.k.a. LawMan)

So Wing Po

Rooftop Institute was co-founded in 2016 by two artists, Yim Sui Fong and Law Yuk Mui, and an art professor, Frank Vigneron. Since its inception, it has been organising artist-led educational research and practice in the context of both current social conditions and Asian history and culture. One of the few community-level charities in Hong Kong to focus on education through art, Rooftop Institute promotes art as a medium of communication and interaction. Parent-child interaction as an educational practice is the emphasis of its website and a book, Event Scores by Artist-Parents.

Father of two daughters, Law earned an MFA from Goldsmiths College, University of London in 2007, and a BA from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2001. Influenced by the conceptual and pop art genres, Law‘s works emphasises the synergy of imagination and criticality. What he enjoys most is creating unconventional styles both the connoisseur and layperson can enjoy. He is a co-founder of Penguin Lab.

Mother of a 2-year-old son, So graduated with a BFA from the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts, Washington University in Saint Louis in 2007, and with an MFA from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2012. Born into a family of Chinese medicine doctors, So grew up surrounded by medicinal ingredients, raw materials which she transformed into playthings and eventually artworks. Convinced that traditional Chinese medicine is rooted in the observation of nature as well as sensitivity and imagination, So applies this same theory to her investigation of forms, materiality, metaphysics and relationality.
