Welcome to Family Day at Tai Kwun Contemporary! For this event, presented by Tai Kwun Contemporary in collaboration with MUDWORK and Rooftop Institute in partnership with Wendy Tai, these family workshops are inspired by Pipilotti Rist’s artwork.. Parents and children are encouraged to explore the body and moving images with activities that invigorate our senses and let us experience the world in a different way. This artist-led programme invites any child aged five or older and accompanied by a parent/guardian to participate.

Cloud-Shaped Stool Workshop

Clouds often appear in children’s drawings, just as their amorphous forms can be easily imagined as different objects. MUDWORK invites parents and children to explore their close relationship and their bodies’ boundaries by drawing each other as clouds, and then turning their artwork into unique wooden stools.

Rhapsody of Light Workshop

Collaborating partner and artist: Rooftop Institute and Wendy Tai

What does the magic of our world look like through children’s eyes? How can parents avoid being judgmental and offering too much guidance so that they can explore imagination with their children? Artist Wendy Tai has designed a workshop to observe and discuss how Pipilotti Rist uses light and colour in her work to express diverse subject matter. She also invites parents and children to reconnect their senses with their surroundings by creating cycle wheels.

Artist Bio

MUDWORK

Rooftop Institute

Wendy Tai

MUDWORK, an art and design studio founded by artists Chung Wai Ian and Ng Ka Chun in 2013, uses sculpture and installation to explore the contemporary state of urban space, community, and nature. In recent years, they have participated in several public/community art projects, including Art in MTR, “Hi! Hill”, M+ Rover, and more. Their work Cement Ping Pong Table was selected as part of the 2015 Public Art Scheme by the Project of Art Promotion Office.

Rooftop Institute was co-founded in 2016 by two artists, Yim Sui Fong and Law Yuk Mui, and an art professor, Frank Vigneron. Since its inception, it has organised artist-led educational research and practice in the context of both current social conditions and Asian history and culture. One of the few community-level charities in Hong Kong to focus on education through art, Rooftop Institute promotes art as a medium of communication and interaction. Parent-child interaction as an educational practice is the emphasis of its website and a book, Event Scores by Artist-Parents.

Wun Ting Wendy TAI is a mixed-media artist. Her work ranges from quiet, personal introspection to playful, social engagement. Her current research interests include exploring the intersections between medicine, grief, healing, education, and art. She holds a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania; an MFA from Rinehart School of Sculpture, Maryland Institute College of Art; and a Post-graduate Diploma in Education, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Tai divides her time between teaching art at Li Po Chun United World College, being a mother, and her studio practice in Hong Kong.
