Chaos and romance, resonance and collision. Wing Shya, the renowned Hong Kong photographer and designer—who has collaborated extensively with filmmaker Wong Kar-wai—and Inoue Tsuguya, a leading Japanese art director and graphic designer—celebrated for his work with Comme des Garcons as well as his own design house BEANS—engage in conversation about their new published book CHAOS. CHAOS covers Wing Shya’s 30 years of photography in fashion and film, as well as unpublished images, private or candid; intriguingly, CHAOS is resulted from an experimental collaboration between the two on the borders of graphic design and photography.
With Wing Shya sending over his massive archive of 30,000 images and with Inoue Tsuguya taking on the task of selecting, sequencing, and presenting—in three days—his interpretation of Wing’s photographic career, CHAOS results in a collage-like overview of a lifetime’s oeuvre capturing the light, shadows, and colours, particularly of Hong Kong. At once an overview of Wing Shya’s vast oeuvre and an homage to the towering influence of Inoue Tsuguya, this conversation is one not to be missed.
“CHAOS: Wing Shya × Inoue Tsuguya” has Wing Shya starting off by exploring his works over the years. This is capped off by a conversation with Inoue Tsuguya, who joins online from Tokyo, with Kotoko Koya moderating. Together, they reveal their collaborative process and method behind the scenes, with unpublished images.
