General

Chaos and romance, resonance and collision. Wing Shya, the renowned Hong Kong photographer and designer—who has collaborated extensively with filmmaker Wong Kar-wai—and Inoue Tsuguya, a leading Japanese art director and graphic designer—celebrated for his work with Comme des Garcons as well as his own design house BEANS—engage in conversation about their new published book CHAOS. CHAOS covers Wing Shya’s 30 years of photography in fashion and film, as well as unpublished images, private or candid; intriguingly, CHAOS is resulted from an experimental collaboration between the two on the borders of graphic design and photography.

With Wing Shya sending over his massive archive of 30,000 images and with Inoue Tsuguya taking on the task of selecting, sequencing, and presenting—in three days—his interpretation of Wing’s photographic career, CHAOS results in a collage-like overview of a lifetime’s oeuvre capturing the light, shadows, and colours, particularly of Hong Kong. At once an overview of Wing Shya’s vast oeuvre and an homage to the towering influence of Inoue Tsuguya, this conversation is one not to be missed.

“CHAOS: Wing Shya × Inoue Tsuguya” has Wing Shya starting off by exploring his works over the years. This is capped off by a conversation with Inoue Tsuguya, who joins online from Tokyo, with Kotoko Koya moderating. Together, they reveal their collaborative process and method behind the scenes, with unpublished images.

Wing Shya (b.1964, Hong Kong)

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Wing Shya traverses the realms of photography, film, design, and fashion. After graduating from the Emily Carr Institute in Canada, Wing Shya returned to Hong Kong and founded the award-winning design studio, Shya-La-La Workshop. Shya has contributed widely to the local music industries and pop culture, winning numerous design awards that affirm his role as an outstanding typographer and graphic designer.

From 1997 onwards, Shya was appointed by legendary film director Wong Kar-Wai as the exclusive photographer and graphic designer for Happy Together, In the Mood for Love, Eros, and 2046. By 2019, Wong and Shya’s collaborations have evolved into extensive projects, ranging from motion pictures to art videos commissioned by luxury brands such as Saint Laurent. In 2021, Shya is expected to release a full feature film produced by Wong Kar-Wai.

A now-established director, Shya began his venture into filmmaking by shooting music videos for Jacky Cheung, Vanessa Mae, and more. In Spring 2010, Shya debuted his first block-buster feature film Hot Summer Days, followed by its 2011 sequel Love in Space. The success of both films led to numerous videographic projects. In 2010, Shya was invited by Rodarte to conceive a fashion-art film for the Maggie Cheung Collection. Later next year, he created Lost Paradise, another fashion-art video for YOOX’s thecorner.com in the Mainland. Over the course of the 2010s, Shya continued to work with various global initiatives by the likes of Sacai, MOTHER magazine, and i-D magazine.

While working on successful film and commercial projects, Wing Shya made his return to fine art in March 2006. Invited by Tokyo’s Mori Art Museum, Shya was the first foreign photographer to exhibit at the museum with his inaugural solo show Distraction/Attraction. In 2007, he was selected to exhibit at Art Basel Miami’s show In Fashion 07, curated by Marion de Beaupré, in which his works were collected at an international calibre. His next solo exhibition, Jealousy, was held in the same year at Xintiandi, Shanghai. In 2008, Shya took part in V&A Museum‘s China Design Now in London. In the following years, Shya’s work was shown at the Louise Alexander Gallery in Italy and +81 Gallery in Tokyo and New York.

In November 2017, Shya showcased his well-received photography retrospective at SCoP Shanghai, curated by Karen Smith, which then travelled to the Xie Zilong Photography Museum in Changsha in Spring 2019. In 2020, during the pandemic, Shya exhibited at the 7th edition of Kyotographie, curated once again by Karen Smith.
