Piano
Hong Kong pianist Shelley Ng has performed extensively in the world’s renowned venues across the three continents including Carnegie Hall, Seiji Ozawa Hall, Harris Hall, and Milton Court; as well as most prestigious festivals such as the Tanglewood Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Hong Kong Arts Festival and Taiwan International Festival of Arts. Her performances and interviews have aired on Radio Television Hong Kong, Metro Radio and WHRB, Harvard Radio Broadcasting.
Highlights of the pianist’s 2022/23 season included a fundraising concert for earthquake relief for Türkiye, which she initiated, curated and performed in, and was presented by the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble (HKNME) in partnership with the Consulate General of Türkiye in Hong Kong; performance on the Czech Republic’s National Day at the invitation by the Consulate of the Czech Republic, as well as touring performances in eight cities in the United States, including at Shenandoah University and the University of Wisconsin- Madison, where the pianist presented engaging, innovative concert repertoire as well as a eclectic mix of contemporary repertoire and those from the standard canon. She recently gave solo and lecture recitals in the Hong Kong Museum of Art and in the HKU MUSE series of The University of Hong Kong. In addition to solo performances, she also toured the United States and Canada with the piano quartet in residence of Lincoln Center Stage. Exploring intersections of her musical career as well as social and artistic interests, she organised fundraising concerts for Sichuan earthquake in 2008 and for people with autism in 2016, touching audiences with her thoughtful programming and expressive performances.
Shelley Ng is currently associate musician of HKNME. Prior to her return to Hong Kong, she was the staff pianist of studios of Midori Gotō, Pamela Frank, Wang Bing and Margaret Batjer. She earned her Master’s degrees from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with distinction and subsequently from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music under full scholarship, where she worked closely with Virginia Weckstrom, Lin Cho-liang and Norman Fischer.
Violin
Hong Kong-Canadian violinist Anders Hui is a passionate concert violinist, chamber musician, orchestra executive and music educator. He is currently Second Associate Concertmaster of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.
Prior to returning to Hong Kong, he was invited by Christoph Eschenbach to be the Assistant Concertmaster for the Schleswig Holstein Music Festival Orchestra, performing with soloist Lang Lang in a month-long 23-concert tour across North America. In 2018, he toured with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Quartet to Shanghai and Beijing, with one of the highlights being a highly acclaimed performance in collaboration with Andreas Ottensamer and the Shanghai Quartet at the Beijing Music Festival. In 2023, he was invited to perform again at the Beijing Music Festival in his own chamber music concert.
In 2020, he was invited to be the Orchestra Executive of Opera Hong Kong Orchestra and performed as Guest Concertmaster where all the productions received critical acclaim.
Hui now teaches at the Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
Violin
Li Chi started playing the violin at the age of 5. Since his debut with the Orchestre de Chambre de Toulouse at the age of 12, he has been invited to perform in major venues across Asia, Europe and North America, including the Boston Symphony Hall, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, La Maison Symphonique de Montréal and Salle Pleyel.
Described as “superb” by The Boston Globe, Li Chi has performed as the soloist with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra. He has also served as the concertmaster of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra. He has shared the stage with Thomas Adès, Leon Fleisher, Yo-Yo Ma and Maxim Vengerov.
In 2017, Li Chi joined the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and served as the Acting Assistant Concertmaster between 2020 and 2022. In 2023, he was hired by Music Director Jaap van Zweden to join the First Violin Section of the Hong Kong Philharmonic.
Viola
William Lane performs as a soloist, orchestral and chamber musician in Australia, Asia, Europe and North America. He studied under Jan Sedivka, Bruno Giuranna and Garth Knox, as well as in Germany at the International Ensemble Modern Academy, and in Switzerland at the Lucerne Festival Academy under Pierre Boulez. He was a prizewinner of Valentino Bucchi Competition in Rome in 2005.
Lane was Principal Viola of Ensemble Resonanz and a member of the Hong Kong Philharmonic; and has appeared as guest violist of Ensemble Modern and the Lucerne Festival Strings. Based in Hong Kong since 2008, he is Founder, Artistic Director and Violist of Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, Asia’s most active professional chamber ensemble dedicated to new music. In 2013 he was awarded the Award for Young Artist (Music) from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.
Cello
Richard Bamping has been Principal Cellist of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra since 1993. He has performed with many of the finest musicians of recent history — Lord Yehudi Menuhin, Leonidas Kavakos, Mstislav Rostropovich, Carlo Maria Guilini, Valery Gergiev, Leonard Bernstein, Lorin Maazel, Sir Colin Davis and Claudio Abbado, to name but a few.
Bamping has performed many of the staples of the solo cello repertoire with orchestras from Europe to the Far East. He has a great passion for playing chamber music with friends and colleagues whenever he gets the chance.
Bamping’s cello, dated 1674 was made in Cremona by Andrea Guarneri and is one of only nine surviving examples of his work.
Double Bass
Hong Kong born Simon Hui was a double bass player of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra from 1987 to 2007. Between 2000 and 2013, he was the Principal Bass of the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong. Since 2010 he has been a member of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble. He has also been active in non-classical music from an early age.
